Drought is No Problem for Oil Producers

circleofblue.org -- Farmers do without water while oil producers use what they want.

Curtis Creel is keen on saving water. He is the water resource manager for the Kern Water Agency, one of 29 agencies that hold water contracts with the California Department of Water Resources, the agency responsible for delivering water across California...

..In spite of the dwindling production from its aging oilfields, Kern County still accounts for 10 percent of the U.S.’s domestic oil production..

..producing a single barrel of Kern County crude oil (..getting it out of the ground) requires 320 gallons of water..

..refining a single barrel of oil – which yields over 40 gallons of various petroleum products – requires 1,850 gallons of water..

Tens-of-thousands of acres of farmland lie bone dry and fallow

Understand that the area of Southern California that this article is about is a desert. There has never been enough local fresh water to support any significant amount of farming. Fresh water has been imported to make the "desert" bloom from the Colorado River system (Lake Meade) and from Northern California for many decades.

Without the imported fresh water, Southern California would cease to exist as we now know it. LA & San Diego would be mere remnants of their current populations and there would be almost no farming activity.

When the oil reserves run out in Southern California and oil production ceases, you will still have the same problem of not enough local fresh water to support the current population and the farming activities that are there now without vast imports of someone else's fresh water.

This is the result of making the "desert" bloom and all the people who wanted to live in & enjoy the wonderful Southern California climate.

FPLREP -- I couldn't agree with more...it is simply ridiculous to have farmland lie bone dry but it requires 320 gallons of water to produce a single barrel of oil not to mention that it takes another 1,850 gallons of water to refine the oil into 40 gallons of various petroleum products. I wonder what the "Anointed One" is going to do about this, since he wants this country to go "Green".

Oil extraction and refinement requires a lot of water.
This is putting a strain on regional water tables and water supplies.

WATER is essential for life.

OIL?

Not so much.

There are alternative energy resources.

You can't get something for nothing. There's always a price...unless you are taking entitlements from the Government.

in the refining of oil the plant would have to to reuse the water over and over again. cost too much to keep putting fresh water into the system

But the oil companies pay more for there water so they get it and the framers don't. Now doesn't that make sense.

They are right about the water use but there are areas like the one south and east of San Antonio where you really don't want to drink the water even before they use it for producing oil. It is that bad.
